MONTH — Assembly Instructions

MONTH
Model 30D · one supplied every 30 days
Fig. 1 — what's in the box · 9 parts · 1 of them isn't real
0Decide
Do this before the month starts. It takes 11 minutes. You need nothing except a decision.
You cannot do this step later. The language this manual came from has no word for later. It has one word that means already.
This month runs whether you build it or not.
An unplanned month is not an unused month. It's a month somebody else builds for you — a sale, a notification, a friend's plan, a bad Tuesday.
1Put in Part 01
Part 01 (PAY) arrives once a month. You can't order more of it. Put all of it in.
Don't hold some back to feel safe. Holding money back is Part 05, and it gets its own step.
2Sort Parts 02–04 by what they're for
You get three sockets: MUST-PAYS · LIVING · SAVING.
Sort by what the money is for — not by how big it is. Two parts can look the same and belong in different sockets. $90 for your mother's medicine and $90 for a subscription feel the same in your hand. They are not the same thing.
Fig. 2 — same size, different socket
3Set Part 05
Part 05 (SPARE) is optional. Use it anyway. It's the only part whose job is to sit there unused.
A month with no spare still finishes. It just finishes by taking money out of a socket at the worst possible moment — and you don't get to pick which socket.
4Read Part 06. Don't touch it.
Part 06 (WHAT'S LEFT) is what remains after Parts 02–05:
Part 06 looks like a dial. It isn't. It's a reading.
Turning it does nothing. People turn it anyway. It's the thing we get asked about most, and it has never once been a fault.
5Fill all three sockets
Three sockets come empty and unnamed. Name them. Then fill them — up to the number you read at Part 06.
An empty socket leaks. It makes no sound, shows no warning, and never counts as a loss. That's why nobody ever blames it.

AnuPlan does Steps 0 to 5 in eleven minutes
It's a salary planner for Android. You lay out your month before payday — pay, must-pays, living, saving, spare — and it shows you what's actually free. Then you name your sockets, and it tells you the moment one of them is still empty.
!Careful — too tight
Don't overfill Part 07. If your pay drops after you've filled the sockets, they're holding more than the month has in it.
This month will tell you, and then let you do it anyway. It won't stop you. Stopping you would mean knowing something about your life that it doesn't know.

6Run it for 30 days. Write down what happened.
The building is done. The rest is just running.
Write down what actually went out, next to what you decided in Step 0. This is not Step 0 and it does not replace it. Writing it down gives you a description of a month. Step 0 gives you a month.
7Read the gauge
A B+ isn't a verdict. It's a position. Fifteen of the missing points are sitting in one socket you didn't name.
8Check Part 08 before you throw the box away
Part 08 (THE GATE) joins this month to the next one. It carries whatever's left across the gap, and it carries it one way only.
Fig. 8 — the gate · leftovers cross, debt doesn't
No month ever starts below zero. Whatever last month cost you, the next one starts at nothing or better. You can't switch this off. It's built in.
§If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Month ends empty and you can't say where it went | Step 0 was skipped | Do Step 0 next month. You can't do it for this one. |
| Part 06 reads below zero | Parts 02–05 add up to more than Part 01 | Take parts out. It won't take them out for you. |
| Sockets say too tight | Pay dropped after you filled them | Move money around. It warns; it won't stop you. |
| One socket gets almost everything | You sorted by size in Step 2 | Sort by what it's for instead. |
| Nothing crosses the gate to next month | Nothing was left | Not a fault. |
9Keep Part 09
Part 09 (TEMPLATE) is the only part that survives the month. It remembers your Steps 1–5, so next month doesn't take eleven minutes.
Don't throw it away. It's the difference between deciding every month and having already decided.
Step 0 is the whole manual.
The other nine are what happens anyway.
+About the "tools needed: none" line
That line is true. Step 0 needs no tool. It needs a decision made before the money moves — written somewhere you'll still see it on day 14.
We built AnuPlan because "somewhere you'll still see it on day 14" is the hard part.
Your salary, planned before it moves
Open it on payday. Lay out the month in eleven minutes. AnuPlan adds it up, shows you exactly what's free, and asks you to name a place for every dollar of it. Save the month as a template and next month starts itself in two taps.
Trackers are Step 6. AnuPlan is Step 0.
